JD Classics Jaguar XK120 at Coppa d’Oro

JD Classics at the Coppa d’Oro

With a select field of 51 pre-1961 classic cars and a two-day, 300km route that takes in the Dolomite Mountains, the Coppa d’Oro is one of the most exclusive and glamorous events on the historic motorsport calendar. JD Classics was privileged to be accepted for entry into this year’s event – and sent a very special 1950 Jaguar XK120 to Italy.

Rubbing shoulders with incredible cars such as a 1927 Bugatti T37, a 1934 Lagonda M45 and a 1956 Lancia Aurelia, driver Keith Roberts and co-driver Barney Yarnold were backed up by the capable on-event support of two of JD Classics’ expert in-house technicians.

The first car left the start line in Cortina on Friday morning in gloriously sunny conditions and, with one-minute intervals separating them, the field began to make its way up through the Dolomite Mountains to Merano.

A successful day negotiating the gruelling terrain resulted in the Jaguar XK120 completing the first stint in 26th place. Overnight, JD Classics technicians inspected the car and prepared it for the following day’s return drive. With the JD Classics support crew following the car on its eight-hour return leg, the XK120 ran beautifully to complete the 2014 Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti in fine style.

Derek Hood, JD Classics’ Managing Director, commented: “Italy is blessed with some incredible classic car events and although the Mille Miglia perhaps gets more share of the limelight, the Coppa d’Oro offers something truly different.

“The exclusivity and rarity of the cars involved means that it’s a real privilege to be accepted for entry, while the grueling route through the mountains is just sensational. I’d like to congratulate the JD Classics technical support crew on preparing the 1950 Jaguar XK120 to their usual impeccable standards and Keith and Barney who drove superbly.”
